Phnom Penh: President of Collective Union of Movement of Workers Mr. Pav Sina, was shocked by the fire at the Grand Diamond City Casino building in Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey Province, which caused the death of many casino staff and national and international guests.
"As a union representative, I was shocked by the fire at the Grand Diamond Casino, which left many Cambodian and foreign employees dead and injured," he said. "I don't want to see this happen."
The incident occurred due to the explosion of the power line, but the fire prevention mechanism in the workplace and the security system of the company does not seem to manage and organize to standard. "This case is a warning to casinos and other factories to check and set up a proper and standardized security management system to avoid possible problems," he said.
"I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of all the victims and pray for the souls of the victims," he said. "All the victims have gone to safety."
At least 20 people were reported dead and more than 30 were missing, while dozens more suffered minor injuries after the fire broke out at the Grand Diamond City Casino and Hotel in Poipet.
Sek Sokhom, director of the Banteay Meanchey provincial information department, said the fire started at midnight on Wednesday and was finally extinguished at 2pm Thursday afternoon yesterday.
"So far there have been more than 20 deaths, as we have seen with corpses and bones," he said. "Higher because rescuers have not yet reached all parts of the building."
Banteay Meanchey provincial police chief Sithi Loh said that 360 emergency workers and 11 fire trucks had been dispatched to the scene, with the cause of the blaze still unknown. Popular with gamblers and guests from nearby Thailand, it has about 400 employees.
