Phnom Penh: It's the worst and the most unacceptable act of SHEICO Group in the Manhattan Economic Zone, Bavet City, Svay Rieng Province, to terminate the employment contract of a 4-month pregnant woman on Monday, May 29, 2023. The victim, Sun Chamroeun, female, ID number 22887, had a QC position in the company.

President of CUMW, Pav Sina, said that it was the worst act of the company to violate Cambodia's labor law, in defiance of the head of government's recommendation, which has been paying close attention to pregnant workers. In particular, it seriously violates the International Labor Organization Convention No. 190 (C190) on Gender-Based Violence and Harassment in the world of work.

"Firing a pregnant worker is the worst act by the SHEICO factory. If we look at the labor law of Cambodia, it prohibits the dismissal of pregnant workers and is a serious discrimination. More importantly, it violates the recommendations of the head of government, who is paying close attention to pregnant workers." Pav Sina said.

He added that "We observe that the actions of the employers do not seem to be in line with the efforts of the government, which is contrary to the law, in violation of government recommendations, in particular, in serious violation of the International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions C190, deals with gender-based violence and harassment in the world of work."

It should be noted that currently, CUMW has been working on both local and foreign grievance mechanisms to resolve the repatriation of this worker. Pav Sina called on SHEICO to stop all illegal acts, especially the company must take the worker back to work in her original position and keep the benefits of this worker from the date of dismissal to the date of return to work, as previously received.
