Pav Sina Challenges Threats to Union Officials in Worker Rights Dispute

Phnom Penh: Pav Sina, President of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, criticized the Deputy Chief of Labor of Kampong Speu, Path Song, for threatening to sue union officials. Sina believes this action is counterproductive and aims to undermine the union's efforts to safeguard the rights and legal benefits of workers.

He stated, "For me, the allegations of the Department of Labor, which are planning to sue our team, I think it is not in vain, but it is an intention to demoralize the union in defending the interests of workers".

The President of CUMW aims to find a fair resolution for all involved, citing the successful intervention by the Ministry of Labor in the Y&W factory case. In contrast, the unresolved situation at the MA Handbag factory raises concerns due to the reported termination of employment contracts and removal of goods without compensating the workers for their labor and entitlements.

He further mentioned the unresolved issue regarding the owner of the MA Handbag factory who absconded, leaving the workers uncertain about the next steps. Interestingly, a group of individuals appeared ready to compensate the workers instead. This situation underscores the dissatisfaction among workers regarding the company's proposed compensation.

"The workers came to sue us, we were just involved in mediation to find a solution for them, not to incite aggression as alleged by the Department of Labor," stated Pav Sina in response to the workers' actions.

Pav Sina emphasized the importance of the Minister of Labor examining the MA factory case instead of attributing blame to the union as troublemakers or aggressors.

He highlighted the disparity between the accusations made by the Labor Department and the actual situation, noting that the union had received reports and complaints from workers seeking mediation and intervention that contradicted the allegations.

He emphasized the stark contrast between the situations at the MA Handbag factory and the Y&W factory, pointing out that at the MA Handbag factory, there were individuals ready to compensate the workers, whilst the owner fled the scene.
