Climate Change Impact Training Held for CUMW Local Unions in Svay Rieng

In a recent initiative aimed at enhancing awareness and preparedness among workers in the textile, garment, leather, and traditional materials sectors, representatives of local leaders from the Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW) in Svay Rieng Province participated in a training course on the effects of climate change. This training session, held on February 25, 2024, sought to equip participants with valuable insights into how climate change can impact workers in these crucial industries.

Beyond the formal sector, the training also addressed workers engaged in the informal sector under the umbrella of the Cambodian Development People Life Association (CDPLA). By extending its reach to encompass a diverse range of workers, the training aimed to foster a comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by climate change across various segments of the labor force.

The primary objective of this training initiative was to empower participants with knowledge about the implications of climate change on their work environments and livelihoods. By enhancing their capacity to comprehend and respond to these challenges, the training sought to enable participants to effectively communicate these insights to fellow union members.

This knowledge-sharing endeavor is pivotal in strengthening collective bargaining efforts and advancing the interests of workers within the framework of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs).

As global temperatures continue to rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, Cambodian garment workers are increasingly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.

From heat stress and reduced productivity to disruptions in supply chains and job insecurity, the impacts of climate change on this workforce are multifaceted and far-reaching.

By integrating discussions on climate change into labor union activities and advocating for sustainable practices within industries, CUMW local unions in Svay Rieng are taking proactive steps towards building resilience among Cambodian garment workers.

Through education, awareness-raising, and collaborative efforts, these unions are poised to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the rights and well-being of workers amidst a changing climate landscape.

In conclusion, by recognizing and addressing the impacts of climate change on Cambodian garment workers, CUMW local unions are demonstrating their commitment to fostering a sustainable and equitable future for all workers in the region.

Through continued education, advocacy, and collective action, these unions are paving the way for a more resilient workforce that is prepared to navigate the challenges posed by climate change with resilience and determination.
