Phnom Penh: To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the shooting to death of Chea Vichea, a hero who loved and protected the rights and freedoms of workers in Cambodia, Pav Sina, President of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, led a working group on the morning of January 22, 2024.
Chea Vichea was shot dead on the morning of January 22, 2004 at a newsstand behind Wat Lanka, central Phnom Penh, Pav Sina tweeted on his social media "Today, on the 20th year anniversary of losing Chea Vichea who was shot dead on January 22, 2004, the light of justice seems invisible".
For the previous 20 years, Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun, the two manufactured killers, have evaded prosecution, and the police have failed to bring the real killer and the commander behind it to account.
In July 2003, Chea Vichea announced to all members of the Free Trade Union that he supported the Sam Rainsy Party. Shortly after, he received a text message on his cell phone threatening to kill him before the shooting.
When he reported the incident to the Phnom Penh Criminal Police, they said they were afraid to act because the intimidator was a senior official and that Chea Vichea should find a safe place to live. Nevertheless, Chea Vichea refused to leave Cambodia in order to defend the rights, freedoms, and interests of workers in Cambodia.
