Phnom Penh: Civil society organizations and trade unions with more than 2,000 workers, people, farmers, practitioners of the informal economy this morning, December 10th, 2023, celebrated the 75th anniversary of International Human Rights Day in Phnom Penh.
International Human Rights Day, commemorates the historic event in which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th, 1948.
Theng Savoeun, President of the Association of Cambodian Farmers' Communities (CCFC), on the occasion of the 75th Human Rights Day, requested the Cambodian government, especially the Ministry of Labor, National Council for Social Affairs to do help organize small farmers in Cambodia who are working in agriculture, food, and informal economy to have access to Social protection, Social assistance, Non-discrimination and Access to health care in accordance with the policy of Social Protection System.
He also asked the government, especially the Ministry of Agriculture, to organize the irrigation system and find markets and freedom of assembly to express opinions in the national association established by farmers without restraint and discrimination.
In that regard, Pav Sina, President of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, said that today, not only Cambodia, but all countries in the world that organized the International Human Rights Day on 10th December in order to commemorate the suffering Injustice and human rights abuses.
He said "This is an opportunity for the people to express their concerns as well as the challenges that are emerging in the areas where we are actually doing agriculture, many people have been facing land issues, as well as agricultural markets. "
Pav Sina said, "As a union organization working in the field of labor, we also face the same challenges as the farmers. We are in a situation where there is legal support and recognition of international conventions of International labor organizations (ILO), which the Cambodian government has ratified to guarantee the right of workers to form unions in collective bargaining, we have a constitution that guarantees the rights of citizens, they have the right to form unions, the right to participate in trade unions Politics, culture, economy, the right to form associations, there is a labor law, a union law to actively participate in the union movement in order to demand better working conditions, better living conditions through higher wages."
He added that "What we are experiencing is the rights and freedoms of the people at the grassroots level. When they form a union, they are fired by the employer or the employment contract is terminated under the pretext of forming a union,".
He added that this movement clearly shows that the actions of employers have been taking away from the law of Cambodia, moreover, the use of short-term employment contracts is spreading, which workers fear and makes workers work without peace of mind.
