Kampong Speu to be included in pilot project to implement road safety policy at factory-level

Kampong Speu: Kampong Speu Province, which is known for its favorable geographical location and has great potential to attract investors, especially investment in garments, shoes, bags and travel products, will be included in the pilot project to implement the road safety policy at the factory level throughout the province.

This was stated by the President of AIP, Kim Panha, who submitted a proposal to the Kampong Speu Provincial Administration at a meeting on improving road safety for workers in Kampong Speu and also the possibility inclusion of the implementation the road safety policy at factory-level throughout the province, stating that a pilot project could be launched from 2024.

The meeting was held on the occasion of AIP Organization's four-day field visit to understand the implementation of road safety policies at the factory level, which took place in Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu and Sihanoukville with the participation of union representatives, government, civil society, as well as the media.

The field visit was also aimed at presenting the results of the Road Safety Promotion Program for Cambodian workers and discussing the implementation of policy at the factory level, with confirmation of the successful implementation of the activities and methods of the model factories, as well as the mainly focus to expand policy implementation, especially highlighting the challenges, solutions and action plans in policy implementation for factories across the country or pilot provinces.

It has been observed that in factories cooperating with AIP on improving the safety of workers, they have been successful in educating and disseminating traffic laws, especially on the use of public roads, including drivers, workers 'trucks also, as a result, significantly reduced workers' traffic accidents.

Deputy Governor of Kampong Speu Province, Sor Soputra, at a meeting on improving road safety for workers in Kampong Speu province and the possibility of incorporating and implementing road safety policy at the factory-level, said that traffic accidents on trucks carrying local workers Kampong Speu has had only one case in the past seven months, a far different figure from the same period last year.

Regarding the accident involving a truck carrying workers, Soputra said, “In the last 7-8 months, we have only had one accident, compared to the same period last year, we have many more cases. "It is difficult, but I still struggle and I say that if I fail, I am willing to resign." As a result of these efforts, Kampong Speu province has achieved a significant reduction in the number of traffic accidents on workers.

If the road safety policy is really approved and put into use according to the above proposal, it will be an effective mechanism to prevent traffic accidents on workers in Cambodia, this policy is currently in the study and consultation phase involving state institutions, civil society organizations, unions, which are the key elements in formulating a perfect policy.
