How to Protect Workers’ Health in Very Hot Workplaces

Phnom Penh: During hot seasons or in workplaces with high temperatures, workers can face serious health risks from extreme heat. Prolonged exposure may lead to dehydration, physical weakness, and potentially life-threatening conditions such as heatstroke if proper precautions are not taken.

To safeguard their health and minimize the dangers of extreme heat, workers should follow these simple but effective measures:

First, drink water frequently and in sufficient amounts. Regular hydration replaces fluids lost through sweating and helps regulate body temperature. Continue drinking even when not feeling thirsty.

Second, wear light, loose, and breathable clothing. Such attire allows heat to escape more easily and keeps the body more comfortable during work.

In addition, workers can use simple cooling methods, such as wearing a hat for shade or placing a damp towel on the face and neck to help lower body temperature.

Workers should stay alert for warning signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, extreme fatigue, or feeling faint. If any of these symptoms appear, stop working immediately, move to a cooler area, drink water, rest, and inform a supervisor. Seek medical help promptly if symptoms persist or worsen.

By staying attentive to their health and taking these basic precautions, workers can perform their duties more safely and greatly reduce the risk of heat-related health problems.
