Nearly 100 Kampong Chhnang Construction Workers Unpaid, Pav Sina Demands Action

Phnom Penh: President of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, Pav Sina, has urged relevant officials to take urgent action in the case of a construction boss not paying nearly 100 workers working at a hydroelectric construction site in Peani village, Kampong Tralach district, Kampong Chhnang province.

Pav Sina said, “In my opinion, in this case, relevant officials must take strict action against the boss’s actions so that he does not escape his responsibility.”

He continued that not paying wages to workers seriously affects their livelihoods, especially those who have just returned from Thailand. They can be sensitive and compare the work in their hometown with their own. Therefore, in order to prevent their livelihoods from being affected, relevant officials must take immediate action.

Workers return from Thailand to work in construction, but boss doesn’t pay them. Nearly 100 construction workers, most of whom have just returned from Thailand, have gathered to protest the failure of the owner of a hydroelectric construction company in Peani Village, Kampong Tralach District, Kampong Chhnang Province to pay their wages for more than a month.

Speaking to the Collective Union of Movement of Workers on condition of anonymity, a female construction worker said that most of the construction workers are from remote provinces and have just returned from Thailand. They really need money to return to their hometowns during the Pchum Ben festival.

Another worker said that the owner has repeatedly tried to delay paying their wages, making it difficult for them to return to their hometowns during the Pchum Ben festival. The worker stated, "We have protested many times, but there is no solution. Now, all we have is no money, not even for a bus to our hometown to reunite with our families."
