Phnom Penh: Non-technical vehicles cannot be used to transport workers as they are. These vehicles need to be modified to meet safety standards, making it easier for workers to travel to and from work.
Heng Sour, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, stated at the Closing Ceremony of the Workshop on "Safety of Workers' Transportation and Harmonization of Industrial Relations in Cambodia," held at the Royal Angkor Resort in Siem Reap, that necessary adjustments must be made to ensure the safety of worker transportation. He emphasized that it is not essential to completely change the current vehicles used for transporting workers; instead, modifications should be made to provide suitable seating, rather than forcing workers to stand in the vehicles.
At the same time, it is essential to regularly check the technical specifications of the vehicles, particularly to conduct strict inspections of those that are not properly maintained, as they cannot be used to transport workers.
He also emphasized that workers, employers, and development partners must continue to collaborate with the Royal Government to find ways to enhance worker safety by improving transportation methods. This approach will help maintain the jobs and interests of current drivers.
The Minister expressed his strong hope that all concerned parties will engage in in-depth discussions based on real-world conditions, which are crucial for improving worker transportation in Cambodia. This will ensure that transportation methods meet technical standards and provide safety and comfort for workers, helping to avoid harm during their commutes to and from work.
It should be noted that as of 2024, nearly 230,000 workers are using vehicles to travel to and from work. Some of these vehicles lack proper seating, which can pose a risk to workers during their journeys.
The Royal Government of Cambodia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, aims to eliminate vehicles that lack proper seating, safety standards, and comfort in the near future.
