Workers Still Face Mental and Economic Insecurity

Phnom Penh: Workers in the textile, garment, footwear, bag and travel products sectors in Cambodia still face mental and economic insecurity, with physical security being better addressed under the care of the Cambodian seventh mandategovernment.

The six recommendations of the Cambodia Prime Minister, which were set at the beginning of the seventh mandate, such as the increase in wages in 2024, the continued payment of medical check-ups for pregnant women workers, the provision of health care to members NSSF In charge through voluntary contributions, etc., which are all policies of the Royal Government to continue to provide additional benefits to workers, which helps to improve the physical security of workers and partly for their economic security as well.

At the same time, workers in the fields above still face their mental insecurity in the form of coercion, intimidation, deprivation of liberty, etc. In fact, workers are insulted by their employers during forced labor hours, Overtime, the closure of their right to express themselves and the right to participate in union movements.

At the same time, despite the economic security of the workers, measures are being taken to deal with the mechanism of increasing wages, continuing to provide medical check-ups for workers who are pregnant, and providing health care to the members of NSSF. However, workers still face economic insecurity due to rising commodity prices, living costs Disproportionate compare to their monthly income, which is the main factor for the economic insecurity of workers.

While still facing a small number of economic problems, workers still face psychological insecurity in the workplace, workers are still abused, forced to work overtime, use of short-term contracts, especially they are fired when they exercise the right to join or forming a union.

Apparently, local union leaders of Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW) in some factories were fired by their employers when they formed unions in the factories.

Unions are independent professional organizations that uphold the rights, freedoms and interests of all workers. Unions play a key role in collective bargaining for better working conditions and the legitimate interests of workers. Employers and unions should work together to achieve the Cambodian government's policy under the motto "One enterprise one peaceful community."
